HOW TO PREPARE FOR LIP FILLERS
Lip fillers are a popular and effective way to enhance the shape and appearance of your lips without surgery.
If you have booked your appointment for lip fillers, there are a few things you need to do before your appointment to reduce the chances of bruising and allow for a more comfortable experience.
Throughout this blog post, we will explore everything you need to do before your lip filler appointment, along with a few aftercare tips for you to follow.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Before your lip filler appointment, avoid caffeine, so please don’t be one of those people who turn up to their appointment with a can of Red Bull!
We promise we aren’t saying this to be awkward… Caffeine can increase your blood flow and potentially increase the chances of bruising after the procedure. So, what should you actually avoid before your lip filler appointment?
1 Week Before Your Filler Appointment
1 week prior to your procedure, you should avoid:
- Blood-thinning medications, such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen
- Alcohol
- Supplements such as Omega-3, Vitamin E, ginger and garlic
- Avoid green tea
24-48 Hours Before Your Filler Appointment
1-2 days prior to your procedure, you should avoid:
- Alcohol
- Smoking
- Caffeine
- Intense exercise
- Drink plenty of water
We advise all of our patients to follow the advice above to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.
You may be wondering, ‘Should I drink lots of water before lip fillers?’ The answer is yes. This is ideal as it can help to enhance the filler's effectiveness and longevity.
This is because most fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, which attracts and retains moisture, therefore keeping your lips hydrated.
But, is there anything you should do on the day of your treatment? Of course there is! Keep reading to find out.
What to Do on the Day of Your Treatment
We advise all of our clients to attend their appointments with no makeup. This is because we need the area to be free of makeup to reduce the risk of any infections.
Make sure that you have something to eat before your appointment to help stabilise your blood sugar levels and prevent you from feeling light-headed. Apart from this, the main thing you need to do is RELAX!
We are here to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible. If you feel nervous at your appointment or have any concerns, please let us know, and we will do what we can to ensure you feel relaxed at all times.
What to Avoid After Treatment?
After your filler appointment, it’s normal to experience some swelling and bruising, however, there are some aftercare tips you can follow to speed up the healing process:
- Avoid excessive exercise
- Avoid alcohol
- Avoid hot environments such as saunas and sunbeds
- Avoid smoking
- Avoid wearing makeup
- Avoid touching your face
- Avoid kissing (this could spread bacteria)
You should follow these aftercare tips 24-48 hours after your appointment. You can also use Arnicare cream to help with any bruising or swelling.
Drinking plenty of water after your appointment is just as important as before your filler appointment, so stay hydrated!
If you have a holiday booked, make sure you leave at least 1 week before your holiday for your appointment. This is because the pressure from flying can exacerbate any swelling and bruising.
Lip Filler and Allergies
If you suffer from any allergies, no matter what it is, make sure you check with your GP before booking in for treatment. This is because lip fillers may not be suitable for you if you suffer from certain allergies.
You must declare any allergies or medical conditions you may have at your appointment for your own safety.
When to Contact Your Practitioner
After your appointment, you should expect some bruising, swelling and possibly some redness at the injection site, however, this is normal and should resolve itself over the next few days.
But… Yes, there is a but! There are a few uncommon side effects you should look out for after your treatment, such as:
- Blanching of the skin
- Your lips feel hot or cold to the touch
- You are experiencing fever or chills after your appointment
- You are in severe pain
These are all uncommon side effects of lip fillers, but it’s important that you know what they are so you can keep an eye out for any of the above.
If you experience any of these side effects, make sure you contact your GP and practitioner immediately, as they are all signs of a vascular occlusion.
This is why it is important to do your research before choosing a practitioner to make sure you’re safe at all times. Here at Hannah McCoy, all of our practitioners come from medical backgrounds, so you can rest assured that you’re in safe hands at all times.
